Every year in early November, the National Outdoor Book Award committee announces their choices of titles that recognize the work of outstanding writers and publishers of outdoor books. Here are some of the NOBA titles of 2010 that you can find on the shelves at the Lanpher Library.
Winning Honorable Mention in the History/Biography Category, is Last Man on the Mountain: The Death of an American Adventurer on K2, by Jennifer Jordan. In 2002, Jennifer Jordan and Jeff Rhoades were climbing K2, the second highest summit in the world, when they found the remains of Dudley Wolfe, an American who disappeared on the mountain in 1939. Jennifer investigated his life and uncovered a story of weath, ambition and betrayal.
Just Passin' Thru, is written by Winton Porter, who cashed in his 401k, cleaned out his bank account and became a "backpack-purging, tent-selling, hostel-running, first-aid-dispensing, lost-kid finding, argument-settling, romance-fixing, chili-making" shopkeeper deep in the Georgia woods, smack on the Appalachian Trail. Told with humor, and with an unforgettable cast of characters, this book won NOBA's Honorable Mention in the Outdoor Literature Category.

Camping with the President, by Ginger Wadsworth and illustrated by Karen Dugan, is the winner in the NOBA Children's Category. This picture book tells the story of May 1903 when President Theodore Roosevelt, dismissed his Secret Service men and sent away reporters to go camping with the world famous naturalist, John Muir. For 3 nights and 4 days, the two men traveled on horseback, slept under the stars and enjoyed the beauty and uniqueness of California's Yosemite Park. As a result of this camping trip, President Roosevelt set aside new new national parks and monuments, a move his presidency became famous for. This book was carefully researched by both Author and Illustrator, to give an accurate account of time and place and the lasting effects of the camping trip.
