WISHTREE 2020!

Last year the Lanpher Library started a tradition for May 1st.

Inspired by the book "Wishtree", by Katherine Applegate, we invited children from HPES and community members of all ages to come to the Library and write their wishes on strips of fabric.  They then got to tie their wishes in the branches of our Pin Oak tree...just like the community members in the book had for generations and generations.

This year is different, but we're still going to have a Wishtree!

If you want to make one wish for us to write down on fabric for you, please fill out the anonymous online form below.  Mrs. Bryce, the Librarian at Hyde Park Elementary School created the form for students, teachers and families, but please use it no matter who you are.  Click "family" please if you're not a student or teacher.  We're all one community family afterall!

We'll start putting wishes in the tree on May 1st, but we'll accept wishes for a few weeks!
Mrs. Bryce included links to more info. about the book "Wishtree", by Katherine Applegate on the form, including a way that you can borrow and download the ebook with your library card!
Please let me know if you have any questions:  [email protected]

VHM Student Essay Contest Guidelines

Our Community Partners at the Vermont Holocaust Memorial is having an essay contest, open to students grades 4 - 12.  VTHM invites Vermont students to honor an individual or group they may know or have encountered in their community, by sharing a story of modern day “rescue.”  This may be a doctor, house of worship, nurse, grocery clerk, shopper, postman, neighbor, friend, organization, parent, delivery person – or others. Ordinary people CAN DO extraordinary things. This is the only way people survived during the Holocaust, and the way people will survive this current crisis.

Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health (D-HH) has launched a mental health webinar series in response to the COVID-19 global pandemic. The series features Dartmouth-Hitchcock (D-H) and Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine experts who discuss the challenges and concerns brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and social isolation. This webinar is a six-part series streaming live each Wednesday, beginning April 22, 2020.

Every other year, the Lanpher Library hosts a Poetry Slam. The Varnum Library in Jeffersonville (our Slam Sister Library) is taking the even years so that our communities can have a Slam every single year during April's National Poetry Month.
Here is the info. on the creative way the Varnum Library is planning the Slam!

Varnum's Virtual Poetry Slam!

Here's how it works-
Participants send in a video of your own original poem. Poem length is a maximum of 3-4 minutes. The deadline is noon April 20, 2020. (That's just 2 weeks folks!) A panel of 5 Socially Distanced judges, possibly in there pajamas, will rank each poem. The poem with the most points wins! There will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. If we get an avalanche of poetry, we can always dream, there may be more winners. Hooray! Winners will be announced April 30.
Parents get your kids to enter. Kids get your parents and grandparents to enter. Dare each other. Challenge each other. Inspire each other. Have fun with poetry.
RULES:
All poems/videos must be originals and not exceed 3-4 minutes in length. Good news is there is no minimum length!

Videos do not need to filmed with special cameras or include any fancy edits – we welcome all videos, however homemade! If you have a phone just flick to selfie mode and start recording. Don't stress yourself. Hit record and express yourself!
So, after you record, download your video to your Google Drive and share it with the Varnum's Poetry People email: [email protected]
Please label the videos of your poems with:-
your name
the poem's title
the town you're from

Include a transcript of your poem with your submission.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Entries received after midday, high noon -12:00, on Monday April 20 2020 will not be eligible for this Digital Slam competition.

Writers may submit only once. We're working fast here!
Record your video. Upload it to your Google drive and share with the Varnum Poetry People email- [email protected]
Writers retain full copyright of their work and we will only share work on the Varnum Memorial Library, the Lanpher Memorial Library (Our Slam Sister Library) and the Cambridge Arts Council (Our Sponsor) newsletters and social media platforms with the permission of each writer. Entering this Digital Slam Contest acts as a writer giving permission to the contest to share their submitted poetry.
This community competition is open to All- all ages, all ethnicities, and all genders. Writers must be a member of the communities we serve. We're talking Cambridge, Johnson, Hyde Park, Waterville, Belvidere and Fletcher.
There is no entry fee and no purchase necessary.
