The Book Discussion for January will be held on Tuesday, January 31st at 6:30 at the Lanpher Library. The title is "The Water is Wide", by Pat Conroy. "The island is nearly deserted, haunting, beautiful. Across a slip of ocean lies South Carolina. But for the handful of families on Yamacraw Island, America is a world away. For years the people here lived proudly from the sea, but now its waters are not safe. Waste from industry threatens their very existence--unless, somehow, they can learn a new life. But they will learn nothing without someone to teach them, and their school has no teacher. Here is Pat Conroy's most extraordinary human drama--based on the true story of a man who gave a year of his life to give an island and a people a new lifetime."

Local artist, Geoff Corey will be displaying his art at the Library until the beginning of February. After teaching for 32 years, Geoff began painting when he retired from Stowe Public Schools. He started working with acrylics and worked his way into watercolors, which are his favorite medium. His work has been influenced by many artists, but he credits much of his training to Kathleen Bergeron, his mentor and friend who is a terrific artist in her own right. He has participated for several years at the Vermont Studio School in Johnson. Geoff Corey resides in Johnson with his wife Martha. They have 3 adult children. Geoff and the Lanpher Library invite you to enjoy the paintings, to wander through the library to view the art and write your comments in the guest book. The paintings are for sale. If you are interested you may visit the library to get the information to contact Geoff directly.
On Monday, December 19th at 3:00, Carrie Riker from the Lamoille County Nature Center will be at the Lanpher Library for the program: "Winter Survival and Adaptations. Some animals tunnel through snow, others bound across the surface and a select few sleep the winter away in protected shelters. Students will take a close look at these techniques through a puppet show, stories and games to learn how Vermont's wildlife survive through the winter."
