Seven hooked rugs by Carolyn Buttolph are on exhibit at Lanpher Memorial Library, for the month of March. The collection includes original geometric, floral and landscape compositions, all executed in wool fabric strips worked on a linen foundation. The hooked rug tradition, which evolved as a home craft of necessity, is now considered by the Smithsonian Museum to be art, Ms. Buttolph says. "Interest in rug hooking has expanded beyond our continent, but one of the premiere exhibits takes place right here in Vermont, at Shelburne Museum, organized by the Green Mountain Rug Hooking Guild and usually takes place in "I work in the traditional method with a hand-held hook. The technique is simple to learn, but facilitates a wide range of styles and design choices," she says. "My favorites are the landscapes. Hooked rugs of wool are durable and suitable for use on floors, but they may also go on tables, chairs, or on the wall. Vermont Precision Woodworks, of Morrisville, provided mill work to hang this show."
