Adopt an Author

3/31/2010

It occured to me as I listed the new titles in the previous blog entry, that several of the titles have been purchased by "Adopt-an-Author" donations.

The Adopt-an-Author program is a great way to help the library and to be the first to read the newest title by your favorite author.  You choose the author, we purchase the books each time a new one is published.  We'll put a book plate in the book honoring the adopt-an-author donation and contact you when the book arrives.  You pay the price we pay:  usually between $14-$17 and you get to be the first person to check it out of the library.

Thanks to the many folks who have adopted authors.  Many best selling and favorite authors' books are on our shelves thanks to your donations.  If you are interested in becoming an adopt-an-author, please contact us and let us know.

New titles in adult fiction:  "The Girl Who Cahsed the Moon" by Sarah Addison Allen (author of "Garden Spells"), "Mist Over the Water" by Alys Clare; "Crawl Space", by Sarah Graves; "Baking Cakes in Kigali" by Gaile Parkin; "House Rules" by Jodi Picoult; "Blood Vines" by Erica Spindler; "Deep Shadow" by Randy Wayne White.

For Young Adult:  "Fang" by James Patterson is here!  There is quite a waiting list for this title, so if you'd like to join the list, let us know.  The good news is that the Maximum Ride books tend to be read quickly, so the list moves right along.

New on DVD:  "Twilight Series:  New Moon" and "The Blindside"

Winnie Belle Learned Fund Grant!

3/10/2010

The Lanpher Library has received a grant for $1000 from the Vermont Public Library Foundation Winnie Belle Learned Fund.  The library will use the funding to purchase the Vermont Center for the Book, Mother Goose Program's "What's the Big Idea?" Librarian Kit to connect math and science ideas with the books and programs we already have in the library.  In addition, several new books with math and science themes will be added to the library's collection.  To extend the learning beyond the library, the grant includes "What's the Big Idea?" Family Kits for families and child care providers to borrow and use with children at home.

The Winnie Belle Learned Fund was established in 2006 by Dr. Burnett Rawson in cooperation with the Vermont Community Foundation in honor of Winnie Belle Learned, a Vermonter, educator and his benefactress.  The goal for the FUnd is to help public libraries of Vermont foster literacy, love of learning, critical analysis and intellectual exploration in their communities, among children of all ages and their families.

We have lots and lots of books on CD for folks to borrow.  Audio books can be a great way to get through a long trip in the car, or back and forth on a commute.  We've had patrons who listen to audiobooks while knitting, or even housecleaning!

Here is a quick list of new books on CD:
"True Compass", by Ted Kennedy; "Crossers", by Philip Caputo; "The Wrecker" by Clive Cussler; "Stones into Schools", by Greg Mortenson; "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" by Dee Brown; "Ford County", by John Grisham; "The Last American Man", by Elizabeth Gilbert; "Honor of Spies", by W.E.B.
