Censorship is a Dead End!  Banned Books Week 2020

9/29/2020

Picture
Banned Books Week is celebrated every year to spotlight current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools.

Books are still being banned and challenged today. A challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group. A banning is the removal of those materials.
While books have been and continue to be banned, part of the Banned Books Week celebration is the fact that, in a majority of cases, the books have remained available. This happens only thanks to the efforts of librarians, teachers, students, and community members who stand up and speak out for the freedom to read.

Antiracist Resources for All Ages

The Lanpher Memorial Library has a wide range of books, fiction and nonfiction, on the topics of racism and antiracism for adult readers to explore.
Below is a slide show of titles that are in the Lanpher Library collection.  This is by no means a complete list, and you can check our catalog:  lanpherlibrary.kohavt.org to find more, or to see if the titles below are available to borrow.
This may seem obvious coming from a Librarian, but when I am curious, interested, or wanting to learn more about a topic, I read.  Books, articles, etc.  I recently read the two articles linked below and want to share them with readers who are looking to raise your awareness about racism in America.

Please share the news with your friends!

Every child who participates gets to choose two books to keep from a wide selection of brand-new children’s books!

We will be wearing masks and will have plenty of space for physical distancing and ask that if two families arrive at once, that you take turns at the book selection tables.

We'll have an open canopy tent set up for cover in light rain, but will postpone if there is a downpour/thunder/lightning.
Please contact us with any questions:  hydeparklibrary@yahoo.com

You can join a CLiF Storytelling Session every Wednesday at 1pm. Go to this page and register to join.  It's free, but they ask that you register so they can protect the privacy of attendees on the zoom platform.

Children's books to support conversations about racism, antiracism and promote greater understanding

6/3/2020

Children are naturally curious about the world around them.  Books for young children can provide a context for more complex ideas and help them make sense of the world.
If you and your child are ready to talk about racism and white privilege, picture books can be a springboard for greater understanding and conversations.
While most of the books below are specifically chosen to discuss racism and antiracism with young children, the Lanpher Library also has many books in our collection that do not focus directly on racism, but will still raise awareness and give children exposure to diversity and promote inclusion.  Books with characters who are representative of racial diversity, but whose stories are relatable to the feelings, hopes, curiosities and experiences of all children are plentiful in the Lanpher Library as well.
We also have many picture book biographies about famous men and women of color, historical picture books, and more.
Please contact us, or search our catalog for more great selections:lanpherlibrary.kohavt.org  hydeparklibrary@yahoo.com
Below are pictures of book covers that are either in the Lanpher Library collection and available to borrow, or have been ordered/pre-ordered and will be available soon.  If you have a library card with us, you can place a hold to reserve any of these titles by going to lanpherlibrary.kohavt.org, log in to your account, and reserve.  If you need help logging in, please contact us:  hydeparklibrary@yahoo.com
You may also search the Library Catalog for books for adults on racism, antiracism, white privilege, civil rights movement, biographies, and more.  Please feel welcome to contact us if you don't know where to start, or just need some guidance.  hydeparklibrary@yahoo.com
With Care, -Amy
