Nancy Marie Brown will present:
Ivory Vikings: The Mystery of the Lewis Chessmen.
In this final Friends of the Lanpher Memorial Library Tuesday Talk of 2019, Nancy Marie Brown discusses the Lewis Chessmen, the most famous chessmen of all time. Found in Scotland's Outer Hebrides in the 1800s, these walrus-ivory figurines captivate visitors to the British Museum--each face is individual, each full of quirks. Now thought to be carved by an Icelandic woman in about 100, they present a capsule history of the Vikings in the North Atlantic, when the sea-road connected countries we think of as far apart and culturally distinct.
This free talk is fully accessible to people with disabilities and open to the public is a Vermont Humanities Speakers Bureau event hosted by Friends of Lanpher Memorial Library.
