On Wednesday, August 7th, the Summer Reading Program participants "dug through the Earth to China" via a Skype visit from Beijing author, Jing Liu. Jing has written 3 volumes of "Understanding China Through Comics", a graphic novel series aimed at making China's vast history accessible.
Jing took us back 3000 years into the past to help us decode a story in the Oracle Bone Script. He not only taught us what the pictures meant, but how they evolved into the modern Chinese characters. This picture is the beginning of the Oracle Bone Script for "soldier". It looks like two claws, or hands. The finished script has an arrow between the hands to form "bing", or soldier. Jing also reminded us that we learn history in general so that we can have a better understanding of where a culture or society came from and where we are now.
We ended the visit by singing "Happy Birthday" to Jing...as his birthday was the day before our visit. We also thanked him because although it was 2:00 p.m on August 7th for us, in China it was 2:00 a.m. on August 8th!
